Time flies unlike Kiwi birds. Our lab has just turned 1, meaning it has been a year since Losia and I arrived here in Sydney along with our two NZ-born Kiwi children (Toto and Haku). As you see in our home page we named our new lab “I-DEEL” (Inter-Disciplinary Ecology and Evolution Laboratory). We are a small group with Losia, Dan, Rose, Melissa and me; we also have an offshore branch in Dunedin, NZ (Bene and Carlos, who will be visiting us soon to escape the cold). Also, Joel, from UK, will join us soon.
We have been planning to do a lab outing for a long time but we did not do this till the Easter Monday. We planned a BBQ at the Coogee beach! But, unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. So, Dan along with his wife Yian hosted us for the BBQ in their place. After lunch we had a nice walk to the Coogee beach as the weather turned for better. There we did what I always wanted to do – a lab meeting on a beach!!!
For our lab meeting, we have been reading book chapters. Now we tackle our third book “Transgenerational Epigenetics”; the first book was “Principles of Evolutionary Medicine” and the second “The Developing Genome”. What I have been thinking is that every time we finish reading a book, we, as a lab, should write a book review (try to publish in TREE or somewhere else nice). But we have not done it yet. We probably should try writing a review for “The Developing Genome”, which was a really good read.
Anyway, here we are in Sydney with many excellent beaches (warm! - unlike Dunedin beaches) and many interesting people. Many of us have just started new research projects and there are many cool discoveries waiting for us. We will be sure to write about them along with other interesting and useful things.
